Though Alika proposed to me on July 4, 2007, the story really goes back to August of 2006, when at a friend's wedding, I had expressed that I was done trying to catch the bouquet after experiencing 5 other failed attempts - two where I had been right next to the girl who caught it and one where I even fought the other girl!

My best friend encouraged me one last time saying, "You never know."  When the bride tossed the bouquet and I was the only one who ran after it to get it in the corner of the room, Alika decided it was time.  A few weeks later we found ourselves at The Wedding Ring Shop and bought a beautiful diamond.  Six months later on the 4th of July, Alika and I went up on his rooftop to watch the Schofield fireworks as usual, but they were disappointing that particular year.  I told him that I didn't want to go up on the roof the next year to watch the fireworks again in case it was boring again.  Alika kept trying to convince me that it might not be bad two years in a row.  Alika kept trying to segue into proposing, but I kept changing the subject.  He finally cut to the chase by asking me to sit in his lap and then said, "I have to give you something."  He pulled the box out of his pocket and since I already knew what it was, I started crying!  Of course he added the formality of, "Will you marry me?"  I just nodded and hugged him!  The fireworks may have been horrible that night, but the proposal, after 11 years of dating, definitely made up for it!
